A guide to new members

As a new member may I welcome you to Birkdale LawnTennis Club/Tennis Section of Southport & Birkdale Sports Club.

The tennis club is one of five sporting sections of Southport & Birkdale Sports Club.  We also provide facilities for cricket, hockey, snooker and squash.  Your annual subscription entitles you to enjoy all our facilities and also includes social membership.  We are also affiliated to the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association).

On joining you will receive a membership card which you should carry at all times when visiting the Club showing proof of membership and gives you preferential rates at the Club’s bar.

Facilities   The tennis facilities at the Club include 4 well maintained all weather courts.  Each court has floodlights which mean tennis can be played all year round up until 10.00pm each evening.   A lot of investment has gone into these courts to ensure that they are in excellent condition and they are constantly brushed and maintained to keep them that way.   Although they are all weather courts they must not be played on when it is icy, snowy or very wet as this can damage the Astroturf and can be dangerous to players.

When Can I play tennis?  Courts are available to play at most times and you can just come down and play.  There is a sheet on the notice board which details when they are being used for coaching or matches.  Winter floodlit tennis sessions are bookable on a booking sheet on the tennis notice board.

What to wear   Players must wear suitable footwear and sports clothing.

These can be purchased at Southport Sports in King Street where members can obtain a 10% discount on showing their member’s card.  They also sponsor our sports club so it is in our interest to support them.

Booking a court Courts can only be booked in winter months of October to March. At all other times if people are waiting to play it is courteous to play 1 set and then let others play their set before going back on .

Floodlit tennis   As mentioned above you need to book a court to play in the winter evenings.

Floodlights – For courts 1 and 2 please ask the staff behind the bar to switch the lights on.  For courts 3 and 4 the switches are on the outside wall near the side door/corner of the cricket practice pavilion.  They take a few minutes to come on.  If they are switched off for any reason they will take 15 minutes before they come on again.  Please ensure all lights are switched off after play.  They will automatically switch off at 10.00pm.

Care of courts   If the courts are covered in leaves/debris before a game they must be cleared using one of the drag mats and the debris put in one of the dustbins on the courts using the brushes provided.  If the courts are clear then after play the courts should be brushed with the drag mat to ensure the sand is distributed evenly but do not brush them if they are wet as too much sand is collected.

Social Tennis   Social tennis is played on Wednesday and Sunday mornings as well as Saturday afternoons.  Any members can just turn up and play with whoever is down. This provides an excellent opportunity for new members to get to know everyone.

Social times are as follows –

Wednesday and Sunday mornings 10.00am – 12.30pm

Saturday 1pm - 3pm

Teams and Cup Matches   The Club has 5 senior teams playing in the Southport & District Tennis League which involves weekly matches from May to the end of July.  We also play in 5 Cup matches against other clubs through the tennis season.  These are the Charlton Trophy, the Christiana Hartley Cup, the Trinity Shield, the College Cup and the Joseph Lord Cup.  Some have qualifying rounds which may be played at our Club or another local club.

There is excellent tennis played at all these matches and all members are most welcome to come down to watch and support our teams.  In the past we have done very well in the Cup matches and League matches.

Practice nights for the senior teams are held on Mondays and Tuesdays in April.  If you are interested in playing competitive tennis, please contact Prue Makin on 0151 924 8112.

Juniors   We welcome new junior members of any age.  Regular coaching sessions are held throughout the year for boys and girls of all abilities and ages.  We also have mini tennis for younger juniors.

For older juniors we have Friday Evening Social tennis in spring, summer and autumn and also practice nights run by our Level 2 Coach Assistant, Jane Johnson.

Junior Matches   These are organised against other clubs for various age groups.  They are held on Saturday mornings from 9.30am – 12.00pm during the spring/summer either at our Club or other local clubs.

We also run a Road to Wimbledon Day for juniors interested in qualifying for this national competition.  Any junior members interested in competitive tennis or would like more information on any of the above please contact Jane tel   07999822754.

Coaching   We offer a range of coaching either in groups or for individuals for both juniors and adults.  Our Club Coach is Mark Doyle who can be contacted on 07919 077 530 for more information.

All our coaches are CRB cleared and we ensure the best coaching and care is provided.

Wimbledon Tickets   As the Club is affiliated to the LTA we are allocated a certain amount of Wimbledon tickets each year.  The list will be on the notice board in February for those members who would like tickets to put their names on together with their BTM No. and the ballot will be held in the spring.   Members must have a BTM No. (British Tennis Membership) and these can be obtained on-line.

Can I play a non-member   Non-members are limited to 3 visits to the club in any 12 month period.  You pay a guest fee of £3 payable at the bar either prior to or after the game and enter your guest’s name in the visitor’s book obtained from the bar.  This cannot be done online so we rely on your honesty to pay.
